Google Chrome and baba Ramdev

Swami Ramdev , also known as Baba Ramdev, is an Indian, Hindu swami and an ardent admiror of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He is particularly well-known for his efforts in popularizing Yoga. He is also one of the founders of the Divya Yoga Mandir Trust that aims to popularize Yoga and offer Ayurvedic treatments.

His camps are attended by a large number of people. Over 85 million people follow his yoga camps via TV channels, and video. His yog teaching sessions are for the masses and free for all. His stated principle in life is to be of help to all and as such the sessions are conducted free of charge.

He also insists that the correct way to pronounce Yoga is Yog, as is done in Devanagari-based languages like Sanskrit.( Source: Wiki)

Wait. What amm i doing? Talking about baba n cadre on my collegian blog. Have i got into Yoga, or Yog as baba would prefer? nah! i am still the same old Bharat Jhurani, who likes eating pani puri, and loves masala hindi movies.

This is just to draw up a link between two very unusual things, and show where marketing can lead to. Creativity.

Anyways, now lets talk about Google chrome, yes the google browser that has been making waves within less than a month of its launch. According to statistics reported by Market Share, Internet Explorer lost 1.63 percent of the Web browser market, falling from 72.15 percent to 71.52 percent from August to September. Mozilla's Firefox, which has been hovering around 20 percent in share since May 2008, dipped slightly to 19.46 percent, down from 19.73 percent in August. Google's shiny Chrome browser claimed less than 1 percent of the Web browser market, capturing .78 percent for the month of September.

The fluctuations may not seem like much, with IE still dominating the Web browser market. But the numbers are interesting to look at on a monthly basis because they point to overall trends and browsing habits. And the biggest trend right now is that IE is losing some of its market.

The numbers from Market Share seem to reflect the need for Web browser companies to always be in front of their users. Internet Explorer can certainly relate.

As the numbers continue to fluctuate —and there is no indication that they'll level off—the more visible browsers need to continue to fight to hang onto what they've already established.

For Internet Explorer it was Firefox, Opera and Safari. Now that Google's Chrome is in the mix, it will be interesting to see if and how the numbers continue to shift.

So, google chrome has indeed been creating ripples.

So what? What about Baba Ramdev? " you can't just leave that part dangling" I can hear these anguishes. Here is the link. This picture.

Marketing at its best i should say. targeted right to the techies of Gurgaon, who in all probability were the first users of Chrome in India, and then showing them a connect to Yog. Awesome Babji, you rock. Only that it would take much more than marketing to convince a marketing student. Maybe a little motivation (not little lots of it!), and convictioin would pull me towards it. Not marketing for sure.

Working Overtime

This one is for all those.. working. n working in the sense, getting paid to work. Like, in a office kinda setup.

Most of my friends are into Service companies... typical TCS, INFY types, and many more who were there but left soon not being able to handle their work.

What i get to hear from them is that overtime is something pretty common these days. You go to the office in the morning, open up your mailbox, promising yourself a smoke after reading the mails. nd what do you see there? " WORK ASSIGNED - COMPLETE BY EOD".
This 3 letter abbreviation EOD, meaning End Of Day, is the most terrible thing that has been coined.

It just means, the work is supposed to be done before you leave office, and that may even mean not needing to come again the next day, coz you very well might not leave that night.

In this regard, with all sympathies from a JOBLESS person (yes guys, i have never ever worked and earned money, not counting my stint in Cadbury - that was mere internship). Here to bring a small smile on their wrinkled face, which any Software Engineer, would get in 3 months of joining, i present a small cartoon.

Do look and smile by EOD guys!!

Where do you sit in class?

College life. Fun with friends. Trips. Line maarinng. First love( is it still first?), and Back Benches. yes, the bench you sit in the class tells a lot about you. The back benchers are always in demand, maybe or most of the times for the wrong reasons though. This particular community. of which i am a proud member and have always been, is in fact so famous that it even has an Orkut presence in various avataars. now this is not to say that only important and famous things find their place in the orkut communities. So many pets and even Study chairs have their own dedicated community.

Coming back, this is something interesting, how can one decide the kind of person one is just by knowing where he sits in the classroom. I started thinking about this, and googled for the same, if there are any research studies in this arena. Why not? When there can be a study on the thinking patterns of people wearing Levi Jeans, why not a study on this topic?

This is what i found on the internet.

Real Estate Crisis - A close look

This blog is named COLLEGIAN. College life is meant to be fun, adventure, happening, thrilling, falls.. everything. yeah! a little bit of acads. But well, COLLEGIAN remains away from that. So, you don't see any gyan here(is it?)

Here i am posting a mail i recently received from a senior - Manan Gupta, about the real estate prices crisis in US. It is explained in a very simple way, telling why it happened at all.

Do read it carefully to get the gist.

Once there was a little island country. The land of this country was the tiny island itself. The total money in circulation was 2 dollars as there were only two pieces of 1 dollar coins circulating around.

1) There were 3 citizens living on this island country. A owned the land. B and C each owned 1 dollar.

2) B decided to purchase the land from A for 1 dollar. So, now A and C own 1 dollar each while B owned a piece of land that is worth 1 dollar.

* The net asset of the country now = 3 dollars.

3) Now C thought that since there is only one piece of land in the country, and land is non producible asset, its value must definitely go up. So, he borrowed 1 dollar from A, and together with his own 1 dollar, he bought the land from B for 2 dollars.

*A has a loan to C of 1 dollar, so his net asset is 1 dollar.
* B sold his land and got 2 dollars, so his net asset is 2 dollars.
* C owned the piece of land worth 2 dollars but with his 1 dollar debt to A, his net residual asset is 1 dollar.
* Thus, the net asset of the country = 4 dollars.

4) A saw that the land he once owned has risen in value. He regretted having sold it. Luckily, he has a 1 dollar loan to C. He then borrowed 2 dollars from B and acquired the land back from C for 3 dollars. The payment is by 2 dollars cash (which he borrowed) and cancellation of the 1 dollar loan to C. As a result, A now owned a piece of land that is worth 3 dollars. But since he owed B 2 dollars, his net asset is 1 dollar.

* B loaned 2 dollars to A. So his net asset is 2 dollars.
* C now has the 2 coins. His net asset is also 2 dollars.
* The net asset of the country = 5 dollars. A bubble is building up.

(5) B saw that the value of land kept rising. He also wanted to own the land. So he bought the land from A for 4 dollars. The payment is by borrowing 2 dollars from C, and cancellation of his 2 dollars loan to A.

* As a result, A has got his debt cleared and he got the 2 coins. His net asset is 2 dollars.
* B owned a piece of land that is worth 4 dollars, but since he has a debt of 2 dollars with C, his net Asset is 2 dollars.
* C loaned 2 dollars to B, so his net asset is 2 dollars.

* The net asset of the country = 6 dollars; even though, the country has only one piece of land and 2 Dollars in circulation.

(6) Everybody has made money and everybody felt happy and prosperous.

(7) One day an evil wind blew, and an evil thought came to C's mind. "Hey, what if the land price stop going up, how could B repay my loan. There is only 2 dollars in circulation, and, I think after all the land that B owns is worth at most only 1 dollar, and no more."

(8) A also thought the same way.

(9) Nobody wanted to buy land anymore.

* So, in the end, A owns the 2 dollar coins, his net asset is 2 dollars.
* B owed C 2 dollars and the land he owned which he thought worth 4 dollars is now 1 dollar. So his net asset is only 1 dollar.
* C has a loan of 2 dollars to B. But it is a bad debt. Although his net asset is still 2 dollars, his Heart is palpitating.
* The net asset of the country = 3 dollars again.

(10) So, who has stolen the 3 dollars from the country ? Of course, before the bubble burst B thought his land was worth 4 dollars. Actually, right before the collapse, the net asset of the country was 6 dollars on paper. B's net asset is still 2 dollars, his heart is palpitating.

(11) B had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. C as to relinquish his 2 dollars bad debt to B, but in return he acquired the land which is worth 1 dollar now.

* A owns the 2 coins, his net asset is 2 dollars.
* B is bankrupt, his net asset is 0 dollar. ( he lost everything )
* C got no choice but end up with a land worth only 1 dollar

* The net asset of the country = 3 dollars.

************ **End of the story; ************

There is however a redistribution of wealth.
A is the winner, B is the loser, C is lucky that he is spared.
A few points worth noting -

(1) When a bubble is building up, the debt of individuals to one another in a country is also building up.

(2) This story of the island is a closed system whereby there is no other country and hence no foreign debt. The worth of the asset can only be calculated using the island's own currency. Hence, there is no net loss.

(3) An over-damped system is assumed when the bubble burst, meaning the land's value did not go down to below 1 dollar.

(4) When the bubble burst, the fellow with cash is the winner. The fellows having the land or extending loan to others are the losers. The asset could shrink or in worst case, they go bankrupt.

(5) If there is another citizen D either holding a dollar or another piece of land but refrains from taking part in the game, he will neither win nor lose. But he will see the value of his money or land go up and down like a see saw.

(6) When the bubble was in the growing phase, everybody made money.

(7) If you are smart and know that you are living in a growing bubble, it is worthwhile to borrow money (like A ) and take part in the game. But you must know when you should change everything back to cash.

(8) As in the case of land, the above phenomenon applies to stocks as well.

(9) The actual worth of land or stocks depend largely on psychology

Hope you enjoyed the short story, and also learnt something from it.

LUXOR Marketing

LUXOR - the company which makes markers, yes yes the same sketch pen lookalike, which we commonly use to colour our otherwise neat looking text books. It is also used by many to show that they have read the complete book. Even my cousin's 9 year old son, uses a fluorescent luxor marker, just colouring his text book, to avoid his mom's ire, for not studying. What he actually does is just picking up random lines from the text and 'highlighting' them.

On a personal note, i use it thinking i would read this part later, and it would help me before the exams to revise. But Alas! till the day of the exam not more than one chapter is 'highlighted'.

Anyways, this post is about the print ads by LUXOR. The campaign for Luxor Highlighters shows a full page of copy with historical information about historical characters. This copy is then highlighted with a Luxor highlighter in such a manner that the face of the historical character is outlined. The beauty of the ad lies in the fact that the copy, which is continuous, makes complete sense only when the highlighted portion is read too. The copy for the ad was readied after much research on the characters.( source: AFAQS)

I am not really sure about the choice of people except maybe Chaplin, but the ad speaks right of the highlighter. It does take a moment or two to really understand what it says, but a closer look clears, and the whole text seems coherent.

MTV - Jadoo Ek Bar

The next one in the pipeline. FFFF rocks. Don know what is it? Fully faltoo film festival. Amazing sense of humour.

Found the first one the series - Bbechare Zameen par, on the LAN. FUNNY. ONe word to describe it. Especially the guy playing Aamir khan. his instincts were impeccable.

Even the story line, and the song sung by Cyrus himself. "Kya Mandir ka ghanta hun mein Maa??". the entry of Aamir( mimicked) as Joker was fun. WHY SO SERIOUS?

I believe these parodies would fare better at the box office than the routine masala fares like Chamku. What exactly was the director thinking while making the movie. And Chamku, i am sure the director was bent on a vindictive agenda against the producer.

Anyways, till then, see the poster of their latest offering.

How i keep myself busy?

It has hit me many times. Why dont i reply to all people who ping me on gtalk. I sometimes simply ignore that they are pinging, or most of the times, give a reply - "Busy". As if i am the president of the United states, having the entire world out there to go take control.. er. care of.

I analyzed and then listed down all the activities that i typically do in a day, and then formulated a research design to see where i was spending most of the time. the sample time being 3 days of observation. yeah! this is what an MBA does to you, make simpler things complex. Observing myself. Huh!

One thing that stood distinctly in my time sliced period was MOVIES. Very surprising, coz i never imagined myself to be a movie buff. i have always enjoyed the typical comedy govinda salman khan type movies, which don't make sense at all. probably, of late, many such movies are being made.

One more interesting insight from this "SHAMTATA experiment", ( yeah, name everything you do, give it an identity. one more thing an MBA teaches you.), is that most of these movies have been watched in the wee hours of morning, typical time of the show being 5AM to 7AM. Why?? Why don't i sleep?. Coz my tummy cries to get it away from the rats play. hunger. and the mess opens at 7:30, so the best way to pass time - MOVIES. Come on, Stop kidding me. i am not the maggu kinds to study at that unearthly hour. and nature has ensured with the mass factory churned face that i have been given, that no one calls me at such an hour. So, back to MOVIES again.

in this pursuit, i thought, why not benefit you - my dear readers, to a short synopsis of the various movies i have seen in the last two weeks, to help you decide if you really want to get your head hammered upon.

ACCEPTED - A nice decent movie about a guy who does not get "accept" letters from any university, and plans to start one of his own. little did he guess the possibility that this could very well be what he'd be doing. So all you people there, wanting to get into the IIMs and IITs, i guess this is a better way. Start your own BJIIM. (when there can be an RGIIM, wht not a BJIIM?)

Sin City - About a dark corrupted city. and the story of 3 different people and the way they get tangled in the SIN CITY. Watch it, only if you have the sadist taste of seeing people getting killed in the most innovative ways. Ruthless.
Sadist here reminds me of a friend. I don remember why i keep calling her sadist, but now the name has stuck. and don ask what she calls me.

Astha Chamma - A cool telugu flick. had a big crush on the actress right from my graduation days, when she used to host a popular local show. Ah! she has the looks. Movie? Who cared about it? I was just staring at Swati.

Ugly aur Pagli - Shameless degraded copy of the korean flick My sassy girl. Worthless, in spite of it having mallika in it.

Wanted - Who said only Rajnikanth can do all the death defying, gravity defying steps? Who said bullets shot from a normal gun need to travel in a straight line? Who said a car needs to be driven only with hands and the body inside the car? See this movie and break all false beliefs.

Choti Si Baat - KK recommended this one and tempted me towards it by the concept. A loser of a guy - Amol palekar, goes to a learned person, and learns all tricks to floor the girl of his dreams. Also tricks to remove the thorn - Asrani, who is presently hoverng around his girl. Now the plot can seriously be so related, to a guy with looks like mine. Nice enjoyable movie. but learning, nah! Alas i would still remain single, as the tricks thought here seem to be too old to apply in the present world.

Shaurya - Awesome movie about the defence services and its internal processes. Rahul Bose has excelled in the role, ann so has Kay kay and others.A must watch.

Mumbai Meri Jaan - Nice touching movie about the after affects of the local train blasts that rocked Mumbai. Madhavan at his best, and Imran Khan has given an amazing performance without uttering a single Hindi word. Again, A must watch.

A wednesday - A common man's reply to the system, holding them on his toes for one whole day. the movie is set in mumbai , with the frequent terror bomb blasts as the backdrop. If you have not seen this, read no more, and immediately jump away to get hold of the DVD.

Now this was the list of movies completed in the last 14 days. but guys, me still busy, and you may still get the reply " BUSY" on gtalk. I am sorry for that. please email in case of anything really important. Wil surely reply even if the question is as mundane as " how do i crack CAT", or as serious as " My CAT has died how do i do its cremation and the ceremony".

now me off to read my Brother's blog. he's been writing really well and frequently. Especially the post describing his chance meeting with Senorita during the train journey of the industrial tour.

okay, now this would be it, before my next one.( which i am sure will be pretty soon.). now i take your leave, so that i can smoke in peace. practising not to smoke in public spaces for the ban from oct 2nd. you never know i may be fined on the premise that this blog is a public space.
